What Is Military Hearing Loss?

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common service-related injuries among UK veterans. It's typically caused by prolonged or repeated exposure to loud noise during service — gunfire, aircraft engines, heavy machinery, and explosions are the most frequent causes.

Tinnitus (persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing in the ears) often develops alongside hearing loss, though it can also occur on its own. For many veterans, tinnitus is actually more distressing than hearing loss itself and can affect sleep, concentration and mental wellbeing.

🎧

Hearing Loss (NIHL)

Permanent damage to the hair cells in your inner ear. Sounds become muffled, quieter or unclear. Typically gets worse over time without intervention.

🔊

Tinnitus

The perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing or whistling when no external sound exists. Can affect one or both ears.

Most Common Causes in Service

  • Live firing exercises
  • Aircraft engines (RAF/Navy)
  • Artillery and mortar fire
  • Workshop and machinery noise
  • Explosives and grenades
  • Heavy vehicle operations
  • Engine rooms (Royal Navy)
  • Combat explosions / IEDs

Related FAQs

The most common questions about hearing loss and tinnitus claims.

Is there a time limit to claim for hearing loss?
Generally, you have 3 years from the date you became aware your hearing loss was connected to your service. However, exceptions can apply — particularly if you only recently realised the link, or if your symptoms have worsened over time. It’s always worth checking even if you think you might be outside the timeframe.

No, it’s not essential. While service medical records can be helpful, the independent hearing assessment we arrange provides the current medical evidence needed. We can also help request your service records if necessary, and your own account of noise exposure during service is valuable evidence in itself.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, claiming for both together typically results in a higher compensation award. They very often occur together as a result of the same noise exposure, and our free hearing assessment evaluates both conditions simultaneously.
No. Compensation for hearing loss or tinnitus is entirely separate from your military pension. Making a claim will not reduce or affect your existing Armed Forces pension in any way.
Yes. Many veterans do not notice the full impact of hearing loss until years after leaving the military. If your hearing loss can be linked to noise exposure during your Army service, you may still have a valid claim, even if you left the Armed Forces a long time ago.
Most claims are resolved within 6 to 18 months. AFCS claims tend to be faster. The complexity of your case, whether both hearing loss and tinnitus are claimed, and the claims pathway used all affect the timeline. We’ll give you a realistic estimate during your free case review.

That doesn’t prevent you from claiming. The MoD has a duty of care to protect your hearing. If noise exposure was inherent to your role and caused damage — whether or not you were told to expect it — you have a legitimate claim for compensation.
